☯ unicorn kid interview ☯

What makes you get up in the morning?
Unicorn Kid: I normally wake up in the afternoon because I write my music late at night until early morning, though sometimes I'll wake up early to Skype with my crush in America before he goes to bed.
If you were in a band, would you rather be in Justin Bieber's dancing troop or Black Flag?
Unicorn Kid: If I was in a band it would be a boy band, like Nsync or Boyzone, we'd all have matching middle parted hair with frosted blonde tips. More Bieber than Black Flag, Henry Rollins seems like a pain in the ass, so does Bieber though.
When doing music, what are you best at? What are you worst at?
Unicorn Kid: I think I'm best at coming up with melodies and chord combinations, I don't know anything about music theory and I can't really play any instruments so it's all about experimenting until something feels right, until it hits that sweet spot and makes you go 'wow'. The best thing I ever did was download Fruity Loops when I was 13, it allows you to write music freely without the technical skill barrier you face with a physical instrument. I'm probably worst at applying myself and concentrating when I have deadlines, if I could play Counter Strike all day instead then I would.
Where's your spot for discovering new music?
Unicorn Kid: Probably my Twitter and Facebook feeds, my friends are always making cool stuff and sharing links, if I like something then I Google it and find out more. I think music blogs are cool but I don't check them daily or anything like that.
Now, choose your camp: Dolphin or Lion ? (you can't choose both)
Unicorn Kid: I think a couple of years ago I would have said lion, because of the hat, however now if I had to choose between the two I'd pick dolphin. I've been reading about this woman called Joan Ocean who believes dolphins can access multiple dimensions and live amongst extraterrestrials, I don't think that's true but it's cool that there's people who believe that.
Let's get down to real business then: how much money for the Lion Hat?
Unicorn Kid: Well I don't really wear the lion hat anymore, I've been doing Unicorn Kid for almost 4 years and I think I've grown and changed a lot since its original conception, the hat doesn't really feel relevant to the project anymore. I still have the original hat and will probably keep it forever, just for memories and stuff, not for sale! A couple of years ago, before I mass produced the hats and sold them, I'd managed to get hold of a few which we auctioned on eBay for charity, they ended up selling for like $200 each!
OK, if it's not money that you want, what else would you trade it for?
Unicorn Kid: I mean, realistically if you offer me a yacht or a million dollars or something you can have the lion hat.
Who is your favorite video game character and why?
Unicorn Kid: Eddy Gordo from Tekken 3 because even if you just mash the buttons you automatically win the fight.
Is there some videogame music you wish you wrote?
Unicorn Kid: California Games for SEGA Megadrive/Genesis has an amazing theme song, it takes me back to my childhood. Hardest game ever though, the surfing and skateboarding levels are impossible.
What would you do if some day you're done with music?
Unicorn Kid: I dropped out of high school to go to art school in Edinburgh but I ended up not going and doing music full time, I think if Unicorn Kid doesn't work out for me then I'll go back and get an art degree, even though I don't really want to do that, I want to do music forever.
I think I already mentionned that I would post every possible track with steel drum pads in it, didn't I? Well, that goes for synth pitchbends too. Love it, love it, love it.
