Jess & Crabbe, Bazzerk interview

Jess & Crabbe just released on Mental Groove the digital bass music compilation I've been waiting for. Take this Zaza Twin song below, it's been been one of the most graceful I've had stuck in my head for months now. The two guys have been kind enough to take some time and tell us more about the project.


What did you need to make this compilation happen ?

We've collected tracks for two years before we started the project. Teki introduced us to Mental Groove and they have been seduced right away. We had to learn the basics of portuguese, gain the confidence of producers or their representative and obtain exclusive tracks for our album (the majority were unreleased).

What do you hope to read about it ? 



That we have contributed to the expansion of Kuduro music in its real form.

What should we know about the musicians involved ?

The Kuduro movement was born in Angola in the early nineties. In the years 2000, artists migrated from the rap movement to the Kuduro scene. The actual Angolese style is usually constructed with vocals whereas the Portuguese style is more instrumental. Some musicians/singers are big stars in Angola (like Cabo Snoop, Bruno M) and other are new comers (DJ Ketchup). Most of the portuguese producers are very young and were unsigned (DJ Wilson, Dj Santiago...). In their country, the movement is smaller but also very prolific. We've tried to showcase a comprehensive and genuine portrait of the singular Kuduro phenomenon, from its original Angolan form to the various Portuguese, French, or South-American declinations it incepted. Zaza Twins are two french producers affiliated with the Logobi music / dance movement (latest declination of Coupé Décalé). Pacheko ( Venezuela ), Diamond Bass ( Portugal ) and Captain Bubbles ( UK ) are quite versatile producers who liked the idea/challenge of making a kuduro-influenced track for the compilation.
